Exodus is the record of God's beginning to fulfil the promise that He made to Abraham. In Genesis 15:13-15 God tells His friend:
“Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. Now as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
Exodus begins with the redemption that God provides from the harsh conditions the Israelites were living in and the judgement of their Egyptian rulers, then moves on to establish a standard of morality by the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai, and concludes with a standard of worship as represented in the construction of the Tabernacle.
There is much that we can learn as we study this book of Exodus which lays the foundations of God's revelation of His person, His redemption, His law and His worship.
